I spent a couple of very pleasant days in Downtown Philadelphia recently. This was not a City that I was at all familiar with, and I was very impressed with the vibe and vitality, of the City in general, and of the craft beer scene in particular.
One area that particularly impressed me is the district to the immediate North of the City Center, including Poplar and Olde Kensington. The area consists of an eclectic mix of 19th Century industrial buildings and town houses, many of which have been restored and repurposed, so that the area is now teaming with a diverse mix of restaurants, bars, shops and other independent businesses. The area reminded me of Hoxton or Islington in London.
On the edge of Poplar sits Love City Brewing, in an atmospheric old warehouse building. This is typical of a modern city Craft Brewery, where it is obvious that the location was selected with the Taproom in mind from the outset, (as opposed to many, when the Taproom was added as an afterthought).
The Taproom appears to occupy at least half of the footprint of the building, with the brewery wrapping around on two sides.
The Taproom includes a large central island-bar, which will enable decent service even when it is busy.
The staff were great, as I have come to expect, and there was a decent selection of beers and bar food.
The bar has seating for around 50, and feels more like a nice pub than a functional taproom. This is a place that I would be happy to return to on a regular basis!
